I know…nobody’s a novice. Nobody wants to be thought of as one, and no one likes to consider themselves one.” -Steve Bechtel

Most of us might be guilty of this. And that’s ok- if you’re truly not a novice boulderer, some of the concepts of this article can still apply to you. If you feel like you’ve hit a plateau in your climbing, for instance. Sometimes it works really well to go back to simpler training methods when you feel like you stop making any gains instead of making your training more complicated.

This article is from climbstrong.com, by Steve Bechtel (also the author of Strength: Foundational Training for Rock Climbing) about his novice bouldering program.

Steve talks about “training age”:

“…a measure of how much of your life you’ve spent actively trying to get better at this sport…Anyone who has not put in at least one to two thousand hours (and by this I mean actual hours of movement – not hours spent at the crag or gym) in the sport is probably still a novice when it comes to training age.”

And Steve includes rules and guidelines for the novice bouldering program. One of the main points? Keep it as uncomplicated as possible.

So, whether you consider yourself a novice or not, give this article a read- it has really useful tips for bouldering training guidelines.
