Dr. Lisa Erikson is a sports chiropractor specializing in overuse injuries of athletes, including climbers. She has written an incredible book, Climbing Injuries Solved that can help you learn to heal yourself. She currently has a Kickstarter going to help fund her book and to raise money and awareness for the American Safe Climbing Association (ASCA). The ASCA mission is to replace deteriorating anchors on classic climbs in the U.S. and educate climbers and the public about climbing safety.

Learn all about her Climbing Injuries Solved book and its Kickstarter below! Funding this project will be worth it….

Q- How does Kickstarter work?

A- A crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter pairs business ideas with the funding to make them a reality! ‘Backers’ pledge support for a variety of ideas and concepts to help bring them to completion; if upon the way the funding does not hit the goal mark, all the fundraising monies are returned to the Backers.

Q- What does ClimbingInjuriesSolved.com have to do with a book?

A- Dr. Lisa has worked hard to answer many of the common questions she sees at her med tent year after year. This book is an attempt to give back while offering support, inspiration and an education to keep climbers (as a community) healthy.

Q- How much funding are you trying to raise?

A- We are 1/2 way there, needing at this time just over $3500 to make this book a true fundraising machine for the ASCA.

Q- Why are funds being collected?

A- This book was paid for with a credit card, which hardly helps fundraise for safe climbing opportunities including bolt and hanger replacement. Paying off the costs of the project (those that are beyond good old fashioned elbow grease) will unweight the project and allow proceeds to begin flowing to the ASCA.

Q- How do I find this project on KickStarter?

A- Here’s a link:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1176625271/book-climbing-injuries-solved/

Why did I write Climbing Injuries Solved?

I come from an avid background of endurance sports, filled with overuse injuries that forced me to learn prevention techniques. College scholarships ruined by repetitive injuries and illnesses required me to learn how to avoid fractures and why time off worked for some instances and not in others. With the addition of self-care, I was able to return to pre-injury status and achieve the accolade of youngest Leadwoman in 2013.

The concept of creating an athlete-based manual on self-care and treatment began at a climbing event’s medical tent, during my 5th year of working with USAClimbing. While providing care, the athletes often asked questions about their physical well being and what corrective actions they could take to fix or care for new and/or lingering injuries. I found the same clues of missing self-care from one athlete to the next. Regardless of what caliber of climber they were, they all wanted to know how to fix themselves but didn’t know of any ways to find out.

Climbing Injuries Solved is my way of sharing my self-taught lessons and the clinical pearls I have accumulated working on and with accomplished climbers, triathletes, and cyclists. Many of the healthiest athletes are the ones that have learned self-care and have taken the time to understand the relationship between strength, mobility, and the mechanics of one’s body.

As a means to reach out and to teach as many athletes as possible, I think this book is the quickest way for me to help initiate a change among our community as a whole. The lessons taught in Climbing Injuries Solved cross the borders between sports. Many of the teachings can also be passed to your doctors, friends and family, not just from one athlete to another.

What will the Funding go toward?

To meet the costs associated with the writing, creative works, and the self-publication of Climbing Injuries Solved. Reaching the kickstarter goal will set the stage for this book to make it to the open market and have it available to a wider audience, so it will make a real difference in the community.

Another reason I wrote Climbing Injuries Solved is to raise money and awareness for the American Safe Climbing Association (ASCA). The ASCA mission is to replace deteriorating anchors on classic climbs in the U.S. and educate climbers and the public about climbing safety. Fully funding this kickstarter will meet the majority of the costs associated with the book, allowing me to initiate my fundraising for ASCA. At the point of meeting costs, 10% of my proceeds (or $1 per book at a minimum) will be given directly to the ASCA.

Artist and Editor Acknowledgements:

Meet the Artist:

This book is comprised of brilliant 3-D medical illustrations by Milos Tutus, a graduate of the Fine Academy of Art in Belgrade Serbia. Milos specializes in 3-D modeling and character design. Each painfully detailed illustration was a collaboration between Milos and I. My knowledge of the human anatomy and Milos’ modeling skills resulted in artistically realistic climbing-specific medical models. He artistically crafted modern adaptions of basic climbing poses for your anatomical understanding.

Meet the Editors:

Kia Hanning, my first copyright editor and a patient and teacher at Germanna Community College in Virginia. Thank you for asking the right questions to make a guide that is not just doctor-based lingo.

Julie Ellison and Alton Richardson were hand-chosen from the staff at Climbing Magazine and California Climber Magazine based on their quality of work and ability. Thank you for helping me make Climbing Injuries Solved something we want to read again and again.

Share and Heal

Climbing Injuries Solved is a manual that should be stacked right next to your favorite crag guide, or shared on your coffee table for family and friends. It is designed to get dirty, be talked about, and shared in discussion.

In writing Climbing Injuries Solved I am merely working to spread light to an injured community. With self-care ideas that should be shared, the goal is to create a community of health based activity where injury is the exception and not the rule.

Rave Reviews

“As climbers, we all ask and expect a lot of this crazy machine we call our body, often without providing it proper carte and maintenance in return. If you are one of the many climbers who is guilty of this, Lisa’s book should be your new climbing partner. It’s chock-full of valuable information about injury origins, prevention, and easy and effective self-care techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or an enthusiastic beginner, this book should be in your collection.”

-Angie Payne, Pro Climber

“For too long, we climbers have ‘dealt’ with injury by popping another ibuprofen, slapping on some tape, or a neoprene brace, an grinding throughout the pain, which leads to the sort of chronic inflammation and imbalances that torpedo a career. Here, sports medicine expert and avid climber Dr. Lisa Erikson systemically delves into how the body works while we climb, how best to care for each key component of our rock-wrestling anatomy, and-most importantly-how to prevent and heal from the specific injuries that we climbers incur. Our sport is rigorous and punishing-this invaluable book gives you the tools to stay healthy and climb smart, strong, and long.”

Did the author ever work out using Sasha’s image on the cover of the book without permission?

Boo. Sports chiropractor should immediately disqualify you from being promoted by a website that’s supposedly pro a scientific approach to training/injuries/etc.
