For bouldering, strength and power are king and one of the best tools for training climbing specific power is the campus board.  However, while the campus board is definitely a powerful tool it is often misused.  Not only will this reduce the effectiveness of any strength and power workout on the campus board, but it is also dangerous and can quickly result in injury.

To give you an idea of what effective campus training looks like, here’s a sample workout from our Bouldering Training Program.  This work is the first workout from Week 9 and is part of the first 6 week strength and power bloc.

The workout itself consists of three campus board exercises followed by a difficult core workout.  Give the workout a shot and if you like it be sure to check out the full Bouldering Training Program for yourself.

*******Just one note of caution! Campusing is dangerous and is not suitable for beginner climbers.  As the workout instructions suggest, if you have not been climbing for at least a year and don’t consistently climb V5 you should either use the campus board with your feet on or should substitute limit bouldering for your power training.
