Figuring out how to train for climbing versus just going climbing can seem tricky, yeah? It’s hard to know where to start….

Whether you’ve been climbing for three months or three decades, if you’ve never participated in a structured climbing training program before – meaning that all you’ve done to train so far is climbing or bouldering – getting started can be a daunting and confusing prospect. However, by following a few basic guidelines, you could soon find yourself on your way to improving your climbing game, and within the next few years, climbing harder than you ever imagined you could.” -Alli Rainey

All Rainey wrote a great article for mountaingear.com that describes 5 tips for how to start training for climbing safely. You should feel encouraged that no matter how much or little you’ve climbed, you’re not alone at feeling unsure of how to structure your training.

For example, one of the tips she shares for how to start training for climbing:

2. Assess how much time you have realistically to train during a regular work week, and where that training can most likely take place. A training plan that you can’t fit into your life consistently will not yield the desired results, nor are you likely to stick with it for any period of time. Be truthful with yourself about how many days a week and for how long you are likely to make it to the climbing gym, fitness gym or climbing outside. Consider at-home training options, too. A few key pieces of fitness equipment can open up a world of home-based training exercises.

Read Alli’s article in full to learn the other 4 guidelines she recommends for starting your training. And don’t forget- everyone is different. Your training plan may not work as well for someone else, and vice versa. Be patient with the process….it’s worth it:)
