Scottish all-arounder and climbing coach Dave MacLeod just published an article on his website Online Climbing Coach in which he describes his observations from the recent coaching sessions he has been hosting at his home wall.  In this article, Dave does not give you any workouts or training advice about what exercises to do when.  Instead, his observations are more general and attempt to cut to the core reasons of why some climbers are able, through hard work and training, to raise their level towards their ultimate potential and others, despite their best efforts, do not improve.

“I hope that running coaching sessions at my own wall would spark people’s imaginations about what fantastic training facilities you can make in a small space. My wall is about as badass as they come for home walls and it took a fair few years of prudent financial decisions to get there. But I remind folk that my last wall was in a small room and was still amazing, and the one before that was a single campus rung. The single campus rung got me up the world’s first E11 and from 8b to 9a in 18 months.” – Dave MacLeod

Ultimately, Dave offers us these insights based on what he has seen during his recent return to coaching climbing .  While they may not give you a concrete workout to try out during your next gym session, really digesting these ideas and honestly evaluating how they apply to your personal climbing could prove extremely valuable.

Dave’s three main observations from his recent coaching session are:

  1. The ability to try hard trumps everything
  2. Time remains a key currency of improvement
  3. Protect your hard earned gains better

Dave delves into all of these observations in much greater detail in the complete article which you can read by clicking through bellow.  Additionally, he includes a short video of his own recent training which includes sessions on his amazing looking home wall as well as outdoor bouldering and even some alpine climbing.
