All the finger strength and pulling power in the world won’t get you up routes at your limit if you can’t climb confidently and are consistently sabotaging your own performance.  That being said, building climbing confidence is something that can be worked on and trained just like power endurance or one arm pull-ups.

To help you not sabotage your own climbing performance, here’s an article by Hilary of Crux Crush in which she talks about building climbing confidence and gives you six tips that she has personally found helpful.

“Most good climbers will say that confidence plays a huge role in their ability to climb well. So much of climbing is mental that not believing you can do a move or make a clip can be the difference between success and failure. I think of gaining confidence like building a wall, each positive experience helps to build up the wall. So what happens when you don’t yet have the confidence to try hard or commit to an insecure move or clip? Or what if a negative experience causes your wall of confidence to come tumbling down?” – Hilary of Crux Crush

Tips for Building Climbing Confidence:

Building climbing confidence takes consistent work and effort just like any other kind of training.  Here are Hilary’s tips for helping you direct your efforts and become a more confident climber:

  2. Tell yourself what a badass you are
  3. Stop the negative self talk
  4. Train to build confidence
