TBP 309 :: Why Climbers Are So Anxious About Food — And What to Do About It
Hey! Welcome back to the TrainingBeta Podcast. This one is just me — no guest — and it’s a topic I’ve been wanting to dig into for a while: the anxiety so many of us carry around food.
Before I get into it, a quick life update. I’m taking a break from climbing right now because my body needs it, and while that’s been disorienting, I’ve found something unexpected to pour myself into: hyper-realistic colored pencil portraits of animals! It’s been genuinely joyful. I’m also well into my master’s program in clinical mental health counseling and will be starting my internship this August 2026 — which means my availability for one-on-one coaching (both mindset and nutrition) is going to shrink significantly over the next few months. If working with me has been on your mind, now is the time.
Okay — on to the episode.
Why I’m the right person to talk about this
I’ve been an Integrative Clinical Nutrition Therapist for 19 years, and my training specifically included the emotional and behavioral side of eating — not just the biology. I’m also a Certified Professional Coach, and I’ve been working with clients on the intersection of mindset and food for years. This episode pulls from all of that.
The top reasons climbers feel anxious about food
- Fear of carbs
- Fear of feeling full
- Not knowing what to eat
- Rigid food rules
- Fear of gaining weight
What to do about it
The theme across all of these is the same: slow down, get curious, and get the actual facts. Debunk the myths you’ve been carrying. Notice the emotions that show up around food — before, during, and after eating. Question the rules. And if this is genuinely impacting your daily life, your social life, or your health, please reach out for support. I mention the National Eating Disorders Association (nationaleatingdisorders.org) as a starting point — they have a free screening tool on their homepage.
